Abstract

Under this research study, an assessment of the effect of the artificial groundwater recharge using treated wastewater on the underground aquifer is conducted to evaluate the implications on the quantity and quality of the groundwater aquifer with respect to its salinity. The study considers the recharge impacts since the beginning of the site operations and predicted the long term impacts of 25 yrs of injection. The groundwater recharge at the site was conducted using an injection well that was installed by the Government at EL- Khayata treatment Plant in 1996 at a depth of 30 meters with a 6 meters screen. The injection rate of the installed well is about 2000 m³/ day. Six Monitoring wells were also installed around the injection well in 1996 to monitor the changes in the water table and the effect of the injected effluent on the quality of groundwater, at distances ranging between 30 and 500 meters from the injection well. During this research period, groundwater samples are taken regularly from the monitoring wells for about six month’s duration, analyzed according to the American standards methods for water analysis for TDS and compared against the historical data collected in 1997 and 1998.
A Groundwater recharge model is constructed to predict the short and long term impacts of recharging the groundwater aquifer.Visual MODFLOW is the selected numerical model that is used to simulate the study area for practical application in groundwater flow and solute transport.
Modeling results confirmed the potential of the current aquifer to provide a sustainable water supply for about 25 years with an average salinity of 2000 mg/l. A maximum head effect was encountered in the model results under the current condition with a value of 1.3 meters. The study reveals that artificial recharge by deep injection wells proved to be a suitable technique that was and can continue to be used for improving groundwater quality at EL- Khayata site with respect to the TDS concentrations.
