Abstract

The work was carried out at the Experimental Farm of El-Kassassin Horticulture Research Station, Horticulture Research Institute to study tree transplants growth as well as uptake, translocation and accumulation of heavy metals of leaves of the selected plants. Also, to study the possibility of using specific transplants for bioaccumulation some heavy metals or for the afforrestation of new reclaimed soils in semi arid areas using treated municipal sewage sludge.
The effects of various sewage sludge (biosolid) application rates (0, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) on growth and N, P, K, Cd, Pb and Ni content in the root, stems and leaves of two pine species, Pinus halepensis and P. brutia and two eucalyptus species, Eucalyptus citriodora and E. gomphocephala were studied. Analysis of covariance for this factorial experiment was applied.
The results of most important data showed that:
1. The highest value of plant height, stem diameter, number of branches per plant and biomass characters (stem, leaves, branches fresh and dry weights) were obtained from Eucalyptus gomphocephala regardless of sewage sludge application.
2. Generally, the application of sewage sludge at the rate of either 30% or 40% increased the vegetative characters, regardless the plant genera or species.
3. Either Pinus halepensis or P. brutia absorbed more Cd without translocation to leaves. Meanwhile, the highest content of Pb was noticed in roots and stems of Pinus halepensis subjected to either 30% or 40% sewage sludge. High amount of Ni was observed in leaves of the studied transplants.
