Abstract

In typical production system, rumi~lants derive most
nutrients from forages. The system of raising cattle and sheep in
the fanns of the Desert Development Center (DDC) of the
American University in Cairo, depends mainly on grazing
practices. Beef and lamb’s meat are produced from forage grazing
animals. For acheving more efficient grazing operation, sheep
graze on the same fodder crop area wllich has already been
grazed by cattle. Alfalfa is the main fodder crop wllich is
available all the year round. For better growth and production,
additional supple~nentation of concentrates to grazing animals is
often recommended.
The objective of th~isn vestigation is to study the response
of growing calves and lambs to energy supplementation under
grazing system in desert agriculture.
Two feedmg trials (on cattle and sheep) were carried out at
South Tahnr in the farms of the Desert Development Center
(DDC), of the American University in Cairo.
