Abstract

Introduction: In view of conflicts & destructiveness of the last century, extending now into the present time and in view of the prominent role ascribed to religion differences in such conflicts, it may seem that it promotes a further enquiry into possible relationship between psychiatry and religious/spiritual domain in a retrograde step. Aim of the work: To illustrate some practical points regarding the relation between psychiatry and religion To fulfill this aim , this study is designed to achieve the following Objectives :-1-To be able to define some concepts like religion , spirituality and morality .2- To outline some clinical aspects of the interaction between religion and psychiatry including :Effect of religious beliefs and practices on mental disorders’- prevalence - prevention and treatment - prognosis and outcome . Summary of the assay: The first chapter included an overview of the different definitions of religion and related concepts. The second chapter included some psychologists’ opinions about religion. The third chapter included the relation between religion and different psychiatric disorders. The fourth chapter included the progress in measurment of religion and the diagnosis and how can religion be useful in treatment of psychiatic disorders or not. Finally we tried to find answers to the following questions: 1. Is religion an inborn instinct or it is something acquired? 2. Does religion have a role in production of mental illness or is it just appear in the symptomatology of the diseases? 3. Can religion be useful in treatment of psychiatric disorders and whether it can be used as way of prevention? 4. Is religion an important matter that need to be introduced in psychiatric programs?
