Abstract

Human population growth will considerably increase the global demand for nutritious food in the coming decades. Malnutrition and hunger still plague many countries (FAO, 2018; Costello et al., 2020; Miščević 2021). Food security occurs “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life” (Palkovič and Fusková, 2016). Land-derived seafood (aquaculture and inland capture fisheries) has an important role in food security and global supply (Foley et al., 2005; Amundson et al., 2015; Costello et al., 2020). Part of these targeted interventions is the recognition that most food systems affect the environment, but that there are trade-offs to ensure we improve food and nutrition security while minimizing the impacts on their supportive ecosystems. Fish and fisheries products are actually recognized not only as some of the healthiest foods on the planet, but also as some of the less impactful on the natural environment. For these reasons, they must be better considered in national, regional and global food security and nutrition strategies, and contribute to the ongoing transformation of food systems to ensure we eliminate hunger and malnutrition (Stankus, 2021) In many communities, inland fisheries are the primary animal protein source and a vital component in ensuring food and nutritional security at the local (Youn et al., 2014) and provide livelihoods for millions of people worldwide, especially in developing countries (Smith et al., 2005; Cooke et al., 2016; Lynch et al., 2020).
