Abstract

The current study is divided into five chapters, which are organized as follows: The introduction highlights the context, the objectives, the rationale, and the research questions of the study. Moreover, it mentions the chapterization of the dissertation. Furthermore, it presents an overview of Coronavirus, awareness campaigns, and awareness posters. Chapter One provides an overview of the theoretical framework; it presents the analytical tools adopted in this study, namely, Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (Machin & Mayr, 2012), Multimodality as a Social Semiotic Approach (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), and Reversal Theory (O’Shaughnessy & O’Shaughnessy, 2004). Then, it reviews the literature in relation to a range of previous studies that explore awareness posters from a variety of angles that all depend on the area of multimodality. For the core of this study, the reviewed literature highlights some studies that employ multimodality in analyzing COVID-19 awareness posters.
Chapter Two comprises the research data, which are thirty English and Arabic posters published in six English and Arabic-speaking countries. It highlights the rationale for data selection from the period January 1st, 2020, to December 31st, 2022, in which the criteria for data selection are due to the number of confirmed cases during Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in several countries. Moreover, it represents the methodology that is used for the analysis, and details the specific steps and procedures to analyze the data. Chapter Three demonstrates the analysis of fifteen English COVID-19 awareness posters. Each five posters is published on the official Facebook page of a different English-speaking country. The first five posters are issued on the official Facebook page of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS); the second five posters are selected from the official Facebook
page of the Department of Health and Social Care- UK; and the third five posters are displayed on the official Facebook page of Healthy Canadians. Moreover, posters are chosen from the data published in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The discussion section that follows the tables highlights the commonalities among all the data, which are essential to come up with the conclusion.
Chapter Four introduces the analysis of fifteen COVID-19 awareness posters released in three Arabic-speaking countries. Each five posters is published on the official Facebook page of a different Arabic-speaking country. The first five posters are posted on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt; the second five posters are selected from the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA); and the third five posters are displayed on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, United Arab Emirates (UAE). All the selected posters in the UAE are in English language, while posters in Egypt and Saudi Arabia are in Arabic. Moreover, posters are nominated based on the data published in 2020, 2021, and 2022. The discussion section that follows the tables highlights the commonalities among all the data, which are essential to come up with the conclusions. Chapter Five determines the most significant findings of the study. First, it states the qualitative and quantitative findings of the posters published in English-speaking countries. Then, it discusses the qualitative and quantitative findings of the posters published in Arabic-speaking countries in light of employing the analytical tools of the eclectic approach. Finally, it represents the conclusion of the study after comparing and contrasting the findings of the posters in English and Arabic-speaking countries. Finally, it demonstrates answers to the research questions, presents the limitations of the study, and offers recommendations for further research.
