Abstract

Gen us Schistosoma (S.) is the causative agent of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease. It is considered a highly debilitating disease causing permanent damage to various organs with major effects on human productivity. It mostly affects the socioeconomic standard and public health in tropical and subtropical regions.
Praziquental (PZQ) is the main chemotherapeutic agent in treatment of Schistosomiasis that was developed in the 1970s. It has the ability to insert itself into the schistosome tegument altering its permeability and fluidity. PZQ has major drawbacks that include its inability to affect the juvenile stage and the emergence of PZQ-reduced sensitivity strains. The dependence on PZQ for the treatment and control of schistosomiasis has led to persistent fear and concerns about the emergence of resistant strains. Control strategies have been directed to the schistosomal tegument as it was proved to be a crucial target for many antischistosomal drugs.
