Abstract

The folks’ religious celebrations and festivals as well as the various social events are very important tools for shedding light on the social, cultural and economic aspects of society. Also, they are important and honest indicators of the progress of society and its economic, political and social stability.
This study deals with the subject of St. Demiana celebrations in Egypt and the maximization of their tourist impact through augmented reality technology, ”the Monastery of St. Demiana in Mansura as a case study”. This study is divided into an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion, as follows;
Introduction: It includes the importance of the subject, the reasons for its choice, along with the objectives of the study, the difficulties faced by the researcher, in addition to the methodology and the most important sources and references relied upon by the researcher.
Chapter I: It includes the scientific description of Coptic mawlids’ celebrations and their nature and historical development through ages in addition to the functions and religious, psychological, recreational, social, cultural, economic importance of these celebrations as well as the reasons for their continuity in the Egyptian society. It ends with the preparations for Coptic mawlids’ celebrations.
Chapter II: It discusses the beginnings of girls’ monasticism in Egypt and list the current female monasteries in Egypt. Then, it deals with the monastery of Saint Demiana at Belqas in details that includes Saint Demiana’s biography, the monastery’s name, location and history in addition to the history of Belqas. Also, this chapter deals with the works of reconstruction of the monastery in the modern era and a detailed description of the current monastery as well as the daily internal system of the monastery. It ends with the monastery’s societal role in the local community.
As for Chapter III, it includes an introduction about the Coptic celebrations all over Egypt and a list of the folks’ religious celebrations of Saint Demiana in Egypt. Also, it deals with Saint Demiana’s celebration in Belqas in details including the writings of historians and ancient travelers about this celebration in addition to the massive preparations of this occasion and its religious, folk arts, cultural, economic, and recreational and entertainment manifestations.
Chapter IV: it includes an introduction about maximization of the tourism impact of folk’s celebrations associated with Saint Demiana through augmented reality. This chapter is divided into two main elements; the firs element deals with the heritage concept then it discusses the concept and types of heritage tourism, heritage tourist characteristics and the mechanism of developing this tourism type. It ends with the heritage tourism in Egypt; the second element deals with the augmented reality (AR) concept, the emergence of this technology and its development and different patterns in addition to the operational stages of it. Also, it deals with the augmented reality applications in the field of tourism and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the use of these applications, along with the combination between virtual Reality and Augmented Reality and the differences between these two technologies. This chapter ends with a conclusion includes the results and recommendations of this chapter.
Then the researcher ends the thesis with a conclusion and a list of the most important results reached and the main recommendations proposed in addition to the list of maps, list of plates, and list of appendixes relevant to the subject of the thesis. At last, there is the list of references relied upon in accomplishing this thesis.
