Abstract

Purpose: this within patient study was conducted to compare and evaluate direct versus indirect pick up of the Locator retentive caps used for four implants retained mandibular overdenture. Materials and Methods: six healthy completely edentulous patients were selected for this study. Each patient received four implants in the mandibular canine and premolar areas. The clinical retention of locator retained mandibular overdentures was measured for direct and indirect pick-up technique of the locator retentive caps with digital forcemeter after one week (T0) and 6 months (T6) of overdenture insertion. Results: 1-There was a statistically significant difference between conventional complete dentures and overdentures regarding retention. 2-At (T0), the clinical retention showed a statistically significant difference from the laboratory measured retention for both direct pickup and indirect pickup techniques. 3- At (T6), there was a statistically insignificant difference between clinical and laboratory measured retention for both direct and indirect pickup. 4- At (T0) there was a statistically significant difference of laboratory and clinical retention values between direct pickup and indirect pickup of attachment, 5-At (T6) there was a statistically insignificant difference of clinical and laboratory retention values between direct and indirect pickup techniques.6- there was a decrease in retention values for both direct and indirect pickup of the attachment at the end of the study. Conclusion: 1-Within the limitation of this study, it was concluded that direct functional pickup technique of locator attachment gives higher values of retention than laboratory indirect pickup technique. 2-Clinical retention measurement provides higher values than laboratory measurement.
