Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a common treatable and preventable disease, characterized by persistent airflow limitation which is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lung to noxious particles and gases.
Acute exacerbation of COPD is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality.
It is known that such exacerbation is typically associated with an increase in neutrophilic (and to a lesser extent, eosinophilic) airway inflammation.
So, a cohort prospective study was designed to investigate thirty four hospitalized COPD patients in acute exacerbation and follow up them for one year duration to detect the possible role of eosinophilic airway inflammation in the outcome and future risk of acute exacerbation of the disease.
