Abstract

At the heart of this thesis lies eminently the rising influence of cognitive linguistics and cognitive metaphor theories, inventively developed by Stockwell (2002), Semino and Culpeper (2002) and Lakoff (1980). This influence gave rise to cognitive stylistics -also known as cognitive poetics- A rapidly expanding field at the interface between linguistics, literary studies and cognitive science. Cognitive stylistics combines linguistic analysis with the cognitive processes that underlie the production and reception of language. This study has therefore particularly employed the cognitive phenomenon of Deixis, developed by Peter Stockwell’s Deictic Shift Theory (2002), to show how deixis and deictic shifts are propellers of Bergson’s (1889) psychological time and guilt and redemption in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner (2003). The study also employed Lakoff’s Cognitive Metaphor Theory (1980) as aid theory, creating a framework of cognitive poetic stylistic interpretation. The study has found that cognitive poetics give the reader a dynamic movement in literary texts, leading to striking understanding and interpretation of literature. It was also found by this study that Deixis and deictic shifts do indeed propel the protagonist towards final redemption. The cognitive Linguistic phenomena that enrich the corpus of this study largely contributed to creating a sense of time progression and propulsion of the narrative structure, thus deepening the reader’s understanding of the characters, their motivations, and the broader thematic elements at play.
