Abstract

Stylistics attempts to establish principles capable of explaining the particular choices made by individuals and social groups in their use of language, so it explores how readers interact with the language of literary texts. The present thesis attempts to analyze the function of language, and the interpretation of the text of Ishogoro’s third novel, The Remains of the Day. The thesis attempts to explore the language habits of Ishogoro and his writing patterns which motivate the readers to interact with his literary text. The main result of the thesis focuses on explaining how the use of linguistic theories are very helpful to the readers and critics to reach the best understanding of a certain piece of work which is Ishogoro’s The Remains of the Day. The thesis identifies the linguistic features and structures that clarify the main themes and ideas of the author which are: (1) dignity and greatness; (2) unseen love; (3) loyalty; (4) regret and (5) class difference and social change.
