Abstract

”This research work aims to examine using online task-based learning to improve the EFL listening and speaking skills of secondary school students in Nigeria and their self-efficacy. The study used a quasi-experimental design. The target population was comprised of fifty (50) SS II students of Baraimul Imaan College, Maiduguri. Four instruments were designed for data collection: the EFL Listening Skills Test, the EFL Speaking Skills Test, the EFL Listening Self-Efficacy Scale, and the EFL Speaking Self-Efficacy Scale. The collected data were analysed using independent and paired t-tests. The findings revealed that teaching using online task-based learning has improved students EFL listening skills, EFL speaking skills, and self-efficacy. Adequate provision of teaching and learning facilities such as ICT-integrated classrooms, learner-friendly spaces, premium subscriptions to LMS suites, and adequate provision of networks and internet in school are recommended to ensure smooth interactions between the teachers and the students. Teachers’ capacity should be adequately built on the effective utilisation of online resources, and their capacity for task-based learning should be improved.
