Abstract

Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) is the most common type of non scarring hair loss affecting the scalp. It results from genetically determined end organ sensitivity to androgens and is characterized by miniaturization of the hair follicles. It usually begins between the ages of 12 and 40 in both men and women and affects approximately 50% of the population before the age of 50. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a highly concentrated autologous solution of plasma prepared from a patient’s own blood. PRP contains platelets that are known to release growth factors that may be valuable in numerous dermatological applications including wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and cosmetic uses.
At sites of tissue damage, platelets are the first cells to arrive and play an important role in mediating tissue repair through the release of growth factors (GFs), such as PDGF, TGF-P, EGF,VEGF, IL GF and FGF, from their granules. These factors are known to regulate cell migration, attachment, proliferation and differentiation, and to promote extracellular matrix accumulation via binding to specific cell surface receptors.
