Abstract

Pragmatics is the set of rules governing the use of language in social interactions. It effectively showed communication skills which based on the correct usage of content and structure with the essence of the functional and social use of language (Bates, 1976, Allen and Brown, 1976). The current study centered on the functional component of language, proposed the acquisition of Pragmatic abilities among typically developing Egyptian children, and demonstrated how children deal with meaning in communication at different stages of development. The participants were composed of 40 Egyptian Arabic-speaking children and categorized into three age stages; group I: 4.0 – 5.0, group II: 5.1-6.0, and group III: 6.1-7.0 years old. The study investigated twenty-four pragmatic behaviors. Pragmatic behaviors are composed of two major aspects of social communication abilities, verbal and nonverbal aspects. The verbal Conversational aspects demonstrated fifteen child intentions such as requesting, giving information, narration, speech acts, cooperative principle, etc. The Non-Verbal Communication aspects proposed nine non-verbal behaviors such as Facial expression, Head movement, Eye Contact/ gaze, Body gestures, etc. Results indicated that pragmatic behaviors such as turn-taking, making choices, labelling and description, repetition, and prediction, were developed and mastered by 7 years. Speech acts and personal narration aspects weren’t mastered until 7 years old. Children exhibited a communication breakdown of 40- 45% in their speech, as changing topics and using excessive speech which considered a typical developmental stage. The variable responses are parallel across age groups for males and females with substantially leveling off at higher ages.
