Abstract

The long - term performance of any construction project depends on the soundness of the underlying soils. Unstable soils can create significant problems for pavements or structures. Poor subgrade soil conditions can result in inadequate pavement support and reduce pavement life. Soil may be improved through the addition of chemical or cementations additives. The effectiveness of these additives depends on the soil treated and the amount of additive used. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the improvement that will take place in the engineering properties of sandy soil from coastal Aden - Almahrah existing road (South of Yemen) such as strength and reduce its vulnerability to water as a result of adding hydrated lime. Laboratory tests were carried out on sandy soil in raw condition and in lime-sand mixtures with different percentages of lime (3, 6, 9 and 12) % by dry weight of sandy soil to determine atterbrg limits, compaction characteristics curve and california bearing ratio CBR tests
