Abstract

The single and multi component adsorption/biosorption of heavy metal ions onto granular activated carbon/fungal waste biomass from simulated wastewater were studied in batch and fixed bed adsorber. Several parameters were studied. The results showed that the adsorption/biosorption capacity depends strongly on pH and species of metal ions .Equilibrium isotherms and kinetic adsorption/biosorption of heavy metals onto GAC/W.F. were studied experimentally Fixed-bed column studies were carried out for single and multi-component systems. The experimental results have been fitted to Thomas model as a second order reversible reaction model. It was found that, the uptake capacity of waste of fungi was greater than that obtained from granular activated carbon (as found in batch system) and the time to reach breakpoint in fixed bed column for biosorption process was longer than that for adsorption process
