Abstract

Bioplastic films and bioplastic composites were developed from discarded carrot pulp. Hemicellulose liquor and cellulose fibers were extracted from carrot pulp using subcritical water hydrolysis. Various biofilms were developed by mixing hemicellulose liquor with different percentages of cellulose fiber (0%, 1%, 5% and 10%). The highest tensile modulus was (206±31 MPa) for biofilm of 5% cellulose content. Bioplastic composites were also developed (PLA/CF) utilizing molding press. Composite sheets were synthesized using different percentages of cellulose fibers in the mixture (0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40%). In addition to mechanical properties, thermal analysis and degradation by enzymes were studied for the composite samples.
