Abstract

The aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of a program based on Project Based Learning Approach on enhancing prospective tour guides’ oral performance skills. The study adopted the pre-experimental one-group pre-post administration design used in the investigation. Participants were randomly selected (N=12) from second-year, Tour Guiding department, Al-Alson Higher Institute for Tourism and Hotels in Cairo. The following instruments were utilized in the study: needs analysis, a list of oral performance skills, an oral performance pre-post test, an Oral Performance scoring rubric, and a satisfaction questionnaire. A training program based on Project Based Learning Approach with a teacher’s manual was designed. The program was administrated to participants in a two-month course. The study utilized Paired Samples Wilcoxon Test to compare the mean scores of the study participants before and after the administration of the Project Based Learning Program. Results of the study revealed that the Project Based Learning approach was highly effective in enhancing prospective tour guides’ oral performance skills as there were statistically significant differences between pre and post-test administrations of the test. Eventually, based on the results of the study, the researcher provided some recommendations and suggestions that may help teachers, educators, researchers, and curriculum designers in terms of enhancing teaching oral performance skills and integrating Project Based learning approach in teaching ESP.
