Abstract

The labor market appears to be the main place where PwDs experience various barriers. In many cases, the employment-to-population ratio of PwDs is half or even one-third of that of the non-disabled persons. Even when employed, they are typically found in low-level, low-paid jobs, precarious employment, or segregated from the mainstream labor market.
Egypt is no exception as disability has been associated with substantial employment disadvantages, in spite of the legal and institutional reforms and initiatives aiming at enhancing PwDs’ employment. Despite the importance of this issue, it receives scant attention in the literature. Thence, the present thesis attempts to contribute to the existing literature. Using the Egypt Labor Market Panel Survey (ELMPS) 2018, several econometric models are estimated using logit and probit analysis to assess the extent to which disability is associated with a lower probability of participation and employment in the Egyptian labor market.
The results show that the disabled are less likely to enter the labor force and be employed. But once he/she is employed, disability is not a significant determinant anymore concerning the disabled employment type or working in the public sector. Hence, a sizable part of the workforce is under-utilized
