Abstract

Breast self examination (BSE) is a screening method used to detect breast cancer early. The current study was carried out to assess the effect of breast self examination training program on knowledge and practice of adolescent girls. Subject and methods: A quasi-experimental one group time series design was adopted in this study to achieve the stated aim. A simple random sample of 135 adolescent girls was recruited. The study was conducted at the students’ hostel of Kafrelsheikh University, Egypt. Two tools were constructed and filled in by the researcher: Structured interview tool; and Breast self examination checklist. Results: The study findings revealed that pre-program, the mean knowledge score was 25.49 + 15.05 which indicated a poor level of knowledge, compared to 57.19 + 4.12 at one month, 59.41 +3.43 at three months, and 58.48 + 3.06 at five months post-program which indicated a high level of knowledge. Concerning BSE practice, only 8.10% of adolescent girls practiced BSE pre-program, compared to 68.90% post-program. As regards levels of practice, 100.00% of adolescent girls showed unsatisfactory level of practice pre-program, compared to 41.50%, 43.70% and 54.10% showed a satisfactory level of practice one month, three months, and five months post-program respectively. Conclusion: The study hypotheses were accepted as the knowledge and practice of adolescent girls were improved after receiving the training program suggesting its effectiveness. Recommendations: Adolescent girls should be equipped with adequate indepth health information related to BSE. As well, early behavioral pattern concerning BSE practice should be emphasized for those adolescents
