Abstract

Adolescence, the period of transition from childhood to adulthood, is a key phase of human development. It is characterized by rapid changes – physical, sexual, psychological, emotional, cognitive, and social. During this stage in the life cycle, a young person’s social, economic, legal and political status is transformed. Adolescence is a time of preparation for the adult roles of worker, citizen and community participant. It is a period of capacity development and one of increased vulnerability and risk, especially for girls. Adolescents represent 22% of the Egyptian population. This means that nearly one in four Egyptians is an adolescent. They expected to grow from 13.8 million in 2000 to an estimated 16.5 million in 2020. Iron deficiency is the most common form of malnutrition in the world, affecting more than 2 billion people globally. Iron deficiency anemia (inadequate amount of red blood cells caused by lack of iron) is highly prevalent in less-developed countries but also remains a problem in developed countries where other forms of malnutrition have already been virtually eliminated. Iron deficiency is not the only cause of anemia, but where anemia is prevalent; iron deficiency is usually the most common cause. The prevalence of anemia, defined by low hemoglobin or hematocrit, is commonly used to assess the severity of iron deficiency in a population.
