Abstract

In this research, and taking oil and gas sector as a case study, a single effect absorption refrigeration cycle was proposed using commercial iso-butane as refrigerant and six commercial hydrocarbon solvents namely condensate, light naphtha, heavy naphtha, reformate, light reformate and heavy reformate were compared. The performance of these cycles was studied extensively with the effect of the refrigerant recovery on each system using Aspen Hysys process simulation software. The optimum solvent-refrigerant pair system which gave the highest coefficient of performance (COP) and the lowest pumping power was compared to both vapor compression cycle and the commercial absorption refrigeration cycles within the same range of operation. The results of this research showed that both heavy naphtha-isobutane and heavy reformate-isobutane systems gave the best results and can compete effectively with the commercial absorption refrigeration cycles without experiencing limitations of these aforementioned cycles. When compared with vapor compression cycles, hydrocarbon absorption refrigeration cycles were found to be attractive especially when there is waste heat in the industrial plant. In this case, and despite their lower coefficients of performance, they will be competitive as will save electricity and thereby lower the operating cost
