Abstract
This dissertation aimed at shedding the light on the development of environmental concern in economic thought, up till the emergence of the notion of the green economy. It analyzed the concepts of green economy and green businesses and scrutinized waste-to-energy as a green business model. It assessed the experience of four countries: Germany, Sweden, India and Brazil in utilizing these projects in developing the waste sector and transforming into a green economy to offer important lessons learned from the experiences of those countries. In addition, it examined Egypt{u2019}s environmental status by analyzing the waste and energy sectors and evaluating the potential role of the emerging waste-to-energy sector in achieving Egypt’s goal of transforming into a green economy and realizing sustainable development. It offered some recommendations to improve the situation of the three sectors to allow for the transformation into a green economy
