Abstract

Emphasis is a distinctive feature of Semitic languages such as Arabic and Hebrew. The present study represents an investigation of the emphatic phenomenon by native speakers of Arabic and the foreign language learners of Arabic through their production and perception.
This study depends on two experiments. Firstly acoustic study, to investigate the nature of phonetic production for native and foreign learners. Some of the acoustic analysis are carried out ex; length of words, voice onset time (VOT) for (voiced and voiceless) stop emphatic and plain consonants, COG for all emphatic and plain fricatives and formants (F1,F2,F3) of vowels.
The results of the native speakers and foreign learners show that the length of emphatic words is longer than the length of plain words. The results also show that VOT is shorter for emphatic sounds than plain sounds in voiceless stop emphatic. In voiced stop emphatic, the results show that VOT for voiced emphatic is longer than plain emphatic.
The results also show that vowels in the emphatic context have higher F1 and lower F2. For F3, the results show that vowels have higher F3 in the context of emphatic fricatives and lower F3 in the context of emphatic stop for foreign learners. As regard to COG, the results show that emphatic words have lower COG than plain words.
Secondly, perceptual study, to examine the perception of the emphasis for native and foreign learners subjective experiments is carried out. This experiment depends on consonants and vowels transition for example the vowels or consonants from emphatic words are cut and replaced by consonants or vowels from plain words. The results from this study show that perception of emphasis follows the vowel, not the consonant in the emphatic syllable.
