Abstract

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the technical performance of linear move and center pivot sprinkler irrigation systems during operating under different working speeds. The evaluations entailed system, individual nozzle flow rates, travel speed, depth and uniformity of applied water. Transects of catch cans are used to provide data on depth and uniformity. The first experiment was conducted at a private farm, Mendisha village, Baharia Oasis, Western Desert, El-Giza Governorate, it was done to evaluate two linear move irrigation systems: LM1 (6 inch diameter number of the nozzle orifice17 attached of 10 l/min flow) and LM2 (8 inch diameter number of the nozzle orifice 25 attached of20 l/min flow). A total 18 catch cans tests were conducted, under three different system speeds (50%, 75%, and 100%) of the standard speed of the system equivalent to (15 m/h, 22.5 m/h, and 30 m/h, respectively). The collected water after the irrigation system full passing can lines were measured using the graduated tube to calculate the low quarter distribution uniformity (DU) and the christiansen uniformity (CU). Coefficient the results showed that: DU (88.90, 77.64, 81.31),(88.55, 85.07, 82.41)% ,CU (86.78, 69.22, 75.19), (85.11, 80.08, 76.03)% under speed of (50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively). The second experiment was done to evaluate two center pivot irrigation systems at a private farm in Nubaria district, El-Buheira Governorate, it was found that: DU (77.98, 84.58, 86.00), (78.28, 83.77, 82.84)%, CU (71.12, 79.50, 83.01),(69.43, 74.10, 73.30)% under speed of (50%, 75%, and 100%, respectively). A 18 catch cans tests were input to the DEPIVOT simulation model to simulate the DU and CU for each test separately, to statistically compare the simulated data and the measured data in the field to validate using this simulation model under the second experiment conditions.The results revealed that it was a good tool to evaluate center pivot irrigation system under the Egyptian conditions. Economic evaluation of the operating costs of the linear move irrigation system is greater than center pivot irrigation system about 10.7%. Percentage of loss in the cultivated area of the center pivot irrigation system (22.62%) which is greater than linear move irrigation system (4.07%).
