Abstract

Dissertation Abstract : Background The prevalence of overweight and obesity are in continuous increasement all over the world especially among young adults who are vulnerable group for overweight and obesity due to unhealthy lifestyles. The management of obesity focuses on physical activity and healthy diet The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of implementing web-based health education on overweight and obesity management among young adults. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized to accomplish this study. Purposive sampling technique was used to recruit total number of 132 young adults, who were invited through World Wide Web (WWW) for globalization. As well as 13 professional experts participated in study. Seven online self-administered questionnaires were used to assess nutritional health status of participants such as weight, their nutritional knowledge and dietary practices. In addition to physical activity related knowledge and practices were assessed. As well as professional experts’ opinions and participant’s feedback were assessed regarding the developed web-based module. Results revealed that the weight average decreased from 77.69(14.1) before the intervention to 68.84(13.3) 3 months after intervention and to 72.12(12.32) 6 months after intervention. There were statistically significant differences before and after 3 months of interventions (p=0.000) related to level of knowledge and practices regarding nutrition as well as related to physical activity. The main conclusion drawn from the present study is that effectiveness of web-based health education module resulted in decreased body weight and BMI after application. Improvement in nutritional knowledge and dietary habits in addition to improvement of physical activity knowledge and practice after application. The study recommended to integrate web-based education in all healthy promotion programs to enhanced healthy behavior.
