Abstract

The Study aims at providing a professional briefing of dialectology by the means of presenting
in chapter one, the most common definitions of “dialect”, discussing the factors that lead to the
emergence of dialects, the application of dialectology, and the most remarkable works carried
out in the field by studying the major dialectal works in three major areas: Europe – The United
States of America and The Arab World.
Chapter two offers a brief understanding to the meaning of dialectology, the importance of the
term isogloss, and ends by discussing the major concepts in dialectology from different points
of view.
Chapter three is concerned with studying the methodology utilized in the dialectal research
studies, then providing three different typed of dialectal surveys such as traditional,
sociolinguistic, and perceptual dialectology.
Chapter four is dedicated to studying the theories of dialectology, discussing the linguistic
theories in a manner that shows their role in the emergence of the different school of
dialectology.Chapter five is dedicated to presenting the corpora as one of the methods of dialectology, by
providing the characteristics that qualifies them to become one of the methods of dialectology,
then the presentation swifts to describing the stages of building written corpora, then showing
some major types of corpora, and ends by mentioning the limitation of corpora utilization.
Finally, while most of the dialectal researches nowadays tend to get interrupted due to the lack
of financing or miss consideration of one of the factors that have an impact on the success of
the dialectal research. Chapter six, in conclusion tends to offer an introduction to a projectized
way of planning any dialectal study in a manner that links the scientific aim of any dialectal
research to the real-life dialectal project constraints, by providing a general point of view that
is built on the presented study, in a manner that secures an appropriate selection of methods
according to each research’s unique nature rather than recommending specific methods in
general.
