Abstract

The effect of three cereal hosts, wheat, sorghum and corn, on the egg production by S. cerealella under mass rearing condition was examined. The rearing of moths on sorghum yielded significantly larger amount of eggs (21.45 ± 0.004 g) than the eggs produced by wheat reared moths (12.17 ± 0.004 g), which was also significantly larger than the amount of eggs produced by the moths reared on corn (3.79 ± 0.008 g). These amounts of eggs were produced by the moths over a period of 60 d, starting from the first appearance of eggs until the decline of egg production to the level of less than 0.1 g per 5 d. The weight of certain number of eggs was also measured. The weight of eggs of the wheat reared moths (10.6 ± 0.018 mg/500 eggs) did not substantially differ from the weight of eggs of sorghum reared moths (10.8 ± 0.019 mg/500 eggs), but both were significantly smaller than the eggs of corn reared moths (11.5 ± 0.02 mg/500 eggs).
Both length and width of eggs differed significantly within the three cultures. Egg length was 806 ± 0.12, 783 ± 0.15 and 818 ± 0.12 m in wheat, sorghum and corn reared insects, respectively. The width of eggs of the wheat reared moths (348 ± 0.06) significantly differed from the width of eggs of sorghum culture (389 ± 0.07), and both were significantly smaller than the egg width in case of corn reared moths (395 ± 0.06 m).
In separate developmental experiments, the life cycle attributes of S. cerealella, i.e., larval and pupal periods, larval and pupal survival, adult longevity, body weight and realized fecundity, were examined. The length of larval stage of S. cerealella reared on wheat (32.19 ± 0.08 d) did not differ from that of sorghum reared insects (32.94 ± 0.09 d), but both were significantly longer than that of corn reared insects (29.12 0.07 d). The pupal periods in both wheat and corn reared insects were very similar (7.1 ± 0.18 and 7.06 ± 0.019 d, respectively), and slightly shorter than in the sorghum reared insects (7.49 ± 0.25 d). The larval survival was generally low on the three cereals, ranging from 15.68% on sorghum to 29.42% on wheat, with no significant differences between the three cultures. No significant differences were observed in the pupal survival which was 85.95%, 81.48% and 91.94% in wheat, sorghum and corn cultures, respectively. Adult longevity ranged from 7.69 ± 0.73 d for corn reared males to 8.87 ± 1.2 d for sorghum reared females, with no substantial differences between cereals or sexes. However, significant differences were found between male and female moths, with the females being significantly heavier than males in the three cultures. In addition, females reared on corn were significantly heavier (12.33 ± 0.45 mg) than the females reared on wheat (9.11 ± 0.41 mg), which were in turn heavier than the sorghum reared females (7.55 ± 0.39 mg). Fecundity was significantly higher in the corn reared culture (129 ± 9 eggs/female) than in either wheat (88 ± 7 eggs/female) or sorghum reared culture (77 ± 11 eggs/female). The total development time for S. cerealella ranged from 7 to 8 weeks, with no significant effect between host cereals.
