Abstract

One of the global trends in teaching in medical faculties has been a move towards more student-centered, integrated, clinical application models. In addition, teaching strategies that promote active learning and problem-solving are increasingly being advocated. An example of such a strategy that combines features of student-centeredness and problem-solving attributes is TBL. TBL is an innovative teaching strategy that utilizes small group interaction, may be effective in teaching necessary concepts to nursing students and confronting the challenges faced by lecturers. TBL enhances peer teaching and learning, promotes active learning and engagement of students with course material and in-class activities. Student engagement is ”the time and energy students devote to educationally sound activities inside and outside the classroom and the policies and practices that institutions use to induce students to take part in these activities. Student engagement is an important concept in education because positive student engagement has been linked to outcomes such as retention; academic achievement and improved critical thinking Aim of the study: This study aimed to determine the effect of implementing TBL on students’ engagement in nursing administration course. Materials and Method: This study was conducted at nursing administration department, faculty of nursing, Mansoura University. The subjects of the present study was included all students (n=251) who were studied nursing administration course during the first term of academic year 2015/2016. The total sample divided into two groups: experimental group (n=128) and control group (n=123). Four types of tools were used for collection data for this study namely: Team based learning knowledge questionnaire, Readiness Assurance Test for Team based learning, Students’ engagement questionnaire, Preference between TBL and traditional learning questionnaire. Results : There was highly statistically significant difference between experimental and control groups regarding academic challenges, active and collaborative learning, students – staff interactions and total students’ engagement domains the majority students of experimental group preferred TBL more than traditional learning Recommendation : TBL method should be implemented in nursing administration course Feedback questionnaire should be administered to collect views of students and meeting with students to let them express their opinions after studying assigned courses. Further research should implement TBL method in other nursing courses which will help to identify effect of TBL method through assessing students’ performance and academic achievement.
