Abstract

Within the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study has attempted to investigate how ideological bias is linguistically expressed in Arabic and English news reports. The investigation is carried out using an eclectic set of linguistic analytical tools that examine bias in the corpus of the study which includes 40 reports from four newspapers, two English; the New York Times (NYT) and the Telegraph (TG), and two Arabic; Al-Ahram (AH) and Al-Jazeera (AJ), addressing various major incidents in the period between February 2012 and July 2015. Upon scrutinizing the news texts, it has been found that diverse ideological and linguistic backgrounds deny the possibility of unbiased reporting. It has also been concluded that Arabic bias is expressed through corroboration and emphasis, while English bias is expressed through offering comments and evaluations.
