Abstract

Despite the great concern, linguistic studies from the second half of the 20th century have had for different sign languages; little research has been concerned with Arabic sign languages, especially Egyptian Sign Language from a linguistic point of view. This study provides an overview of the linguistic structure of Egyptian Sign Language, giving a special concern to the syntactic structure. The research focused on the two syntactic phenomena most studied across sign languages: negation and question in Egyptian Sign Language. Different structures of negation and questions were investigated, representing the manual and non-manual features accompanying these structures. Many examples of the two phenomena were illustrated and explained in detail. The data resources and data analysis were discussed. The results showed that Egyptian Sign Language has a manual dominant system of negation and content questions, while it has a non-manual system of polar questions.
Moreover, the study represents a survey for the Egyptian deaf community, their population in Egypt, deaf education and the status of sign language in the Egyptian deaf community.
