Abstract

ADHD is a common neuropsychiatric problem affecting
7-9% of children, the defining features of ADHD are inattention,
hyperactivity and impulsivity, commonly present early in life
and cause impairment before age 7 year.
These behavioral manifestations contribute to diminished
academic, occupational and social functioning having
neurobiological bases.
There are 3 subtypes
1-Hyperactive impulsive subtype.
2 –Inattentive subtype.
3-Combined(hyperactive/ impulsive and inattentive)subtype.
Since the origin of ADHD is unclear which limit the
pharmacological effectiveness and makes adverse effects
common researchers are developing more effective and safe
treatments.
This study was conducted upon 50 patients having a
diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
of any subtype according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorder (DSM IV), 44 boys (88%) and 6 girls (12%) their ages ranged between 6 and 12 years with a mean value of
8.0±1.41
The children were recruited from both Psychiatric
Outpatient Clinics of children with special needs carein the
Institute ofPost Graduate Childhood Studies ( IPCS), Ain Shams
University, and a Acupuncture Outpatient Clinic inNational
Research Centre (NRC),after approval of the medical ethical
committees of bothNRC and IPCS, Ain ShamsUniversity,Also
written consent was taken from all patient s guardiance prior to
the study.
Patients with psychiatric comorbidity with ADHD
(except learning disorders) like mental retardation, epilepsy or
chronic medical illness were excluded from the study.
Medical history taking, thorough clinical and psychiatric
examination, investigations in the form of EEG, IQ test and
Connors Rating scale were done for all patients.
Acupuncture protocol was applied to the 50 patients.
The ADHD studied patients were divided into two groups:
group I: Received medical treatment with acupuncture with
therapy (n=38 patients).
group II: Received acupuncture therapy only (n=12 patients). The two groups are compared as regard hyperactivity,
impulsivity and inattention scores on Conner‘s Rating Scale.
Acupuncture therapy using filiform disposable needles
in selected points according to Traditional Chinese Medicine
and YNSA were implemented specific for ADHD.
All patients received 12 acupuncture sessions, two
times per week for 6 weeks each session takes from 20-30
minutes.
In this study the treatment efficacy of acupuncture therapy
for ADHD patients using Conner‘s parent questioner was 88%
of the studied group who showed improvement with variable
degrees while 12% of the studied group, showed no
improvement.
The present study showed that the efficacy of acupuncture
treatment was more evident in the hyperactive subtype followed
by the mixed and inattentive subtype with statistically significant
difference between the 3 subtypes.
Also it was found that acupuncture therapy was more
effective in younger children than in older patients.
