Abstract

Man’s dependence upon food resources from cultivated lands had its genesis some 10,000 years ago. The potential for food production in conventional agriculture and in alternative systems is undergoing inten- sive re-examination now because of current rapid population growth and attendant pressures for conversion of highly productive,cultivated lands to other uses. Approximately four-tenths of the world’s land surface is within the arid and semi-arid zones as defined by Meigs (1953). In both zones nutrient resources and water are two’major limiting factors to plant productivity. Fig (Ficus carica L.) is one of the most important fruit trees cultivated in the Mediterranean littoral zone of Egypt. The acreage of fig plantation, therefore has been increased and programs for improvement of fig production have been set especially in the desert area of Burg El- Arab.
