Abstract

The present study aims at finding out the problems in translating metaphors in the Glorious Qur’an through the assessment of the ways a metaphor is rendered in four translations of the Glorious Quran. The data analyzed consist of forty verses representing both Madani and Makki Suras, which are randomly spotted. The model adopted is that of the Cognitive Translation Hypothesis proposed by Mandelblit (1995). The present study reveals that translators of religious texts face problems on the lexical, pragmatic, syntactic, and cultural levels in translating from Arabic into English. This study is composed of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The introduction contains statement of the problem, objectives of the study, definition of terms and research questions. The theoretical considerations constitute the first chapter. Chapter two, presents data analysis of the problems related to the Makki Suras. Chapter three presents data analysis of the problems related to the Madani Suras. Finally, the conclusions and recommendations for further research.
