Abstract
Clinical suspicion based on the presence of characteristic symptoms and/or syndromes may suggest the presence of an NET, which then requires assessment of specific or general tumor markers that currently offer high sensitivity in establishing the diagnosis and can also have prognostic significance. Measurement of specific amines or hormones establishes the biochemical confirmation of a GEP tumor, whereas measurement of CgA appears to be a universal marker. Similarly, both urinary catecho-lamines and plasma metanephrine estimations are highly sensitive and specific for a chromaffin cell tumor, whereas basal or stimulated plasma calcitonin offers the highest diagnostic accuracy for the presence of MTC. Current histopathological and molecular techniques not only provide the diagnosis but can also, to some extent, predict the biological behavior of the tumor.
