Abstract

This thesis includes four parts: Part 1,11 arid III comprise phytochemical etudy of three plants belonging to family Euphorbiaceqe, namely, Jatropha curcas L., Euphorbia terracina 1., and Ricinus communis I,. Part IV comprises quantitative estimation of the flavonoidal contents in Euphor— bia terracina 1. and Ricinus communis 1,.
Part I: Jatropha Curcas 1,,
1. Two crystalline materials were isolated from the unsa— ponifiable part of the light petroleum extract of the leaves. The first material (yield 0.05%), m.p, 137°C, acetyl deriva— tue m,p. 126—127°C. It is identified as B—sitosterol The 8econd material (yield 0.005%), p. 170°C. It was identified as etigmasterol.
2. A crystalline material was isolated from the ether extract of the plant (yield 0,05%) np 276—278°C. It how a triter-. penoidal characters, its molecular formula C63H11709, acetyl derivative m.p. 155—157°C.
3. Two crystalline flavonoidal eubetancee were isolated from the alcoholic extract of the leaves. The phyical propertiee and the colour reactions show that they are flavone glycosidee, The first glycoside (yield 0.005%) map. 245—246°c,c—glycoside
