Abstract

The present thesis involves an analytical study of the complexation equilibria in solutions of 1,4-bis (4َ methylanilino) anthraquinone (quinizarin green, QG) and 3-amino-1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone (alizarin maroon, azm). The two ligands possess a unique combination of properties that enable these reagents to be urtilized in various analytical applications.
Because of the high acidity of QG reagent compared with the 1<4-dihydroxy compound, it can be expected that the stability of the complexes of the arylamino derivative will be lower than of the complexes of the analogous hydroxy compound (quinizarin) and also the formation of iys complexes will be affected less by the pH of the solution. Both of these properties are favourable attribute in analytical applications of QG reagent. However no studies have yet been reported involving the complex equilibria of arylaminoanthraquinones with metal ions.
The intention of the present work is in part, to establish the complexation equilibria existing in solution of QG with Y(III), La (III), Th(IV) and U(VI), and to determine the basic characteristics of the complexes formed. The optimum conditions favouring the direct spectrophotometric determination of these metal ions were investigated. The main objective of the work is to accomplish this.
