Abstract Well conducted epidemiological studies have shown that lental illnesses among adults are likely to affect at least JOY. of the population in developing countries. Also about half the population in these countries is under 15 years of age, and mental disorders of chi ldren were estimated to be about 10. In order to make a significant impact on a problem of such dimensions, the WHO recommended the integration of lental health services with PHC. ACCOI-d i ng 1 y, a draft of the national programme of len tal health for Egypt was developed 1n October 1986. It was planned to train all rural PHC personnel of Alexandria by the end of 1987. Thus the aim of” this study is: 1- Evalua t i on of menta 1 hea 1 th serv ices prov i ded for pr 1 mary school children by some PHC units in Alexandria. 1- Screening of behavior disorders among prlmary school children. The followinQ research methods are used: The study was held in 2 randomly chosen rural PHC units in Alexandl- i a and El-Pharaana urban school mental health clinic, in addition to 2 rural, 2 governmental urban and 2 private schools following these PHC facilities. A representa t i ve samp le from the pr i mary school children was selected by the stratified random sample method to be examined for chronic morbidities and for assessment of behavior disorders. The total sample size was 682 pupils. The mental health services were evaluated by a sheet for description of PHC and school health services, studying of PHC records, a ques t i onna i re for assessment of knowledge and attitude of teachers, social workers and PHC personnel as regards behav i or disorders. - The menta 1 hea 1 th of ch i 1 dren was eva 1 ua ted by a sheet for descr i pt i on of personal & P?ychosocial data, and the standardized Arabic version of the ”C.B.C.L” & ”Behavior Questionnaire for Completion by Teachers” for assessment of behavior disorders. - Clinical assessment oT school children for bronchial asthma, chronic cal-diac diseases, physical disabilities, diabetis mell2tus, visual acuity, weight and height. The present study revealed the ~ollowing results: t Assessment o~ behavior disorders: The prevalence rate of behavior disorders among primary school children in Alexandria ranges between 4.7 & 6. - The problem was more common among boys than girls. |
