Abstract

The.aim of1bis study is to evaluate me global ta.lIUWllUlemm .iwpcu;~ of marine vehicles for comparison with that of shore vehicles in order to select the proper means for the entire transport process (from the site of production to that of utilization for goods, or from the origin to destination for human trips). To achieve this, a methodology based on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is proposed here applied both to evaluate the environmental impact of a new sea passenger line consisting of high-speed ferries and to compare the sea transports with other shore transport means (car and train).
‎The comparison shows favorable environmental performances of the sea transport with respect to shore ones even if a more careful analysis of some aspects is needed in order to co~ for fast passenger transportation too, the general feeling of -env.irnnmf>nt:ll1y.fi:iendly.maritime Jran.sport.s.
‎The only solution of the traffic congestion and the environmental pollution, as ~ in this wOOl, h to use 1he short ~ ~ system to ease 1he 1Iaffic problems in Alexandria specially that we have all the factors to establish this system and all the proposed solutions were done.
‎Through this thesis there is a study of the use of the marine transportation system in Egypt which surrounded•by the mediterranean sea at the north side and the red sea at the east side, the north coast of Egypt has about eleven cities and they don’t use the short sea shipping between them. Alexandria taken as a case study cause it is the most important city and has about four million person may reach to about five or six million person at the ~l1mmer,. jt .is proposed to lL.~ the..marine 1Tanspor1atioo system to .share the other Jand 1Tanspor1atioo means to assist to ease the 1Tanspor1atioo congestion not to be alternative for them.
‎There is a study of the marine transportation system from its definition, components, why marine transportation system and some examples of the countries which already use it, and also a study of the accidents statistics which result of the different means of the land transportation allover the world. h is so important 10 study here the high speed crafts as a component of the system from the different sides like the configuration, c~ forces., t’P.~i<:hlnr.e and the resQODSe to waves..
‎A study of environmental impact assesment is done here to the different means of land trlu1spottBtion and high speed crafts from the emmissions, noise impact and the ability to use renewable energies and study the different types of them.
‎A1so tbere is a study of tbe different ~ans of the 1and tronsPOmmon wDich ~ used at Alexandria from the number of units and transferred commuters and a study of the relative impacts for the existing land means of transportation and two proposals of the high speed crafts, the fuel consumption and the taken time.
‎There is a preliminary study for the requirements of the high speed crafts and a comparison fur the capital cost of the high speed crafts” and the land transportation meaDS”.
Fmally. there is a study of the sea state. wind. current and waves a through one year.
‎This thesis include four chapters and this is a smmnery for every one oi
‎Chapter one contains an introduction to the short sea shipping gt advantages of using of the short sea shipping. some examples in different c statistics of accidents fatalities globally. we found that the sea shipping deceas of fatalitjes JlDd also the comparison of the constnJctjon cost.for the new h broadening 1he existing roads and the sea routes.
‎c~ two c.on.1aim ’Cm. en.vironmemal impact ~<\met\t c.omparlng land and sea routes. a study of the pollutants and emissions rates. and also a new and renewable energy sources.
‎Chapter three contains a study of advanced high speed crafts which ~ speed. c.omfort and safety at the same time which taken by the land 1ranspOJ1 and comparison between the different types.
‎Chapter four contains the case study. statistics study for all the public t .like genenll buses. trnm or trains and the private tnmspoJtJJtjon like taxi. n private cars, Compa’rison of the capital cost of the different means of transport proposed vehicles requirements and a study of the depth. current. wave and Alexandria 1btougb. a1.\ 1h.e ~ a1.\ \Wet 1h.e ytf.U.
