Abstract

The present study is a trial to penetrate the Egyptian coastal problems and to develop a twO¬dimensional numerical model adapting with the Egyptian coastal feature. Also it quantifies the actual coastal processes, wave characteristic and sediment transport along the complex coastal features for design purposes. The study covered the coastal problems along the Red and Mediterranean Sea. In general it could be said that, Egyptian coasts suffer from serious coastal problems. Many of these problems are due to human impact. Lack of field data and designing tools are the main obstacle faces the proper and economic marine structure design. The study clarifies the needs for suitable numerical models to simulate the coastal processes Many steps are taken within this study to modify a numerical model especially for the Egyptian coastal problems. The Implicit Sediment Transport two dimension numerical model. ImSedTran-2D, which developed in this study is one of the efficient tools to simulate the morphodynamic sea forces and predict the coastal behavior due to human intervention. The ImSedTran-2D model is the summary of long term work to modify the Perlin and Dean. 1983 N-line model. The new model has the ability to simulate the actual bed contour instead of using the equilibrium profile equation in Perlin and Dean model. The ImSedTran-2D can predict the coastal behavior in the vicinity of any kind of merged coastal structure. which represent a main demand in handling many of the Egyptian coastal problems along the Mediterranean coast. The model also has a special module dealing with the wave attenuation over coral reef with high accuracy. The wave distribution over coral reef is one of the main requirements for proper marine structure design along the Red Sea. The study covered the sensitivity and parametric analysis for the modified model and established a new technique for calibration and verification procedures. The available local and worldwide field data studies are used to check the model accuracy. Field data studies along ldku coast-Egypt. Red Sea Aquarium-Egypt, Ala Moana Beach-USA, Sahl Hasheesh tourist center-Egypt: Nagoya port-Japan, Damietta harbor-Egypt and El Agami resort area-Egypt are used to verify the new model. It is recommended to use the presented model in identifying the environmental impact of coastal protection work, quantifying the actual coastal processes for design purposes. evaluating alternative design options. and optimizing the solutions.
