المستخلص

Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women.
Screening for breast cancer is of paramount importance as it allows for early detection of the cancer in its early stage with better prognosis and successful treatment.
Methods of screening for breast cancer include mammography, clinical breast examination and breast selfexamination.
Breast self-examination is simple method of screening and has the advantage of being performed by the woman herself.
The goal of breast self-examination as with clinical breast examination is to detect palpable tumor, an additional role of breast self-examination is to increase awareness of normal breast composition, so that there is aheightened awareness of any breast changes.
The aim of the present study is to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination among females from urban and rural areas, and to study their acceptance to breast selfexamination before and after health education program.
This study was conducted in two family health centers, family health center of Suzan Mubark Menofiya University Hospital in Manshat Soultan ( represent the rural area ) and the Southern Health Center in Shebin El- Kom city (represent the urban area).
The study included 217 females (111 from urban area and 106 from rural area).
They were assessed by pre-designed questionnaire and checklist to evaluate their knowledge, attitude and practice to breast self-examination.
Then, health educational program was implemented to improve their knowledge and attitude and to encourage them to practice breast self-examination regularly and in a correct manner.
We found that, there was significant difference between urban and rural females regarding their knowledge about breast selfexamination.
However, there was no significant difference between them regarding attitude and practice. Knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination among females from urban and rural areas were affected significantly by the level of education.
After implementation of the health education program, a remarkable improvement of knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination was found among the studied groups.
Lack of knowledge and forgetfulness, were found to be the most common barriers for practicing BSE among the studied females,in addition to lack of privacy, anxiety, dislike to examine themselves, difficulty due to lactation or not being risky for BC were also mentioned as barriers.
The improvement in the total score levels of knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self-examination among the studied groups after the health education program emphasized that females either from urban or rural areas are accepting breast self examination as screening method for breast cancer.
