Abstract This thesis deals with softwere aspects of on-line computer control of physicRl process. A miniconputer~basen system for the control of a nuclear reactor will be considered in great detail. The main characteristics affecting the use of minis in control are those pertaining to its real-time capabilities such as the input/output bus, interrupt system and fast transfers with secondary storage. The software aspects of the mini such as the addressing modes, the instruction repertoire and the subroutines linkage together with the softw8re package of the mini affects the selection of a certain mini for a processu Operating systems are as important as the computers because they supervise their job by time-sharing all the resources of a system such as the central processor unit, me~ory, interrupt system and input/output devices. The operating systems increase the efficiency of the computer system also by the lliultiprogram- ming cor.cept. ~n operating system would consist of four b?sic parts= the ScheQ.gler”activates prograCls At appropri’1te times depending on their prLorlt Le s, the Ev§.g:LE;r_e.Q.!:handles all possible interrupts in the system and assigns to each of them the appropriate servIng routine, the §.i;o~?.g_~_jI_lloc£.iq_~:keeps |
