Abstract

Inflammation is a physiological series of responses generated by the host in response to infection or any other insults as for example bums , trauma, or chemical .
Inflammation can have rapid onset and lasts for short period of time ( acute inflammation ) or it can persist due to a continuous stimulus or injury ( chronic inflammation ) .
The inflammatory response is characterized by vascular and cellular changes responsible and contributing for the pathophy Biological changes occurring with tile inflammatory response.
Recent studies were suggesting that the mixed benzodiazepine agonist diazepam possesses immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties on the different inflammatory responses via its action on the peripheral benzodiazepine receptors present in different tissues as in particularly adrenal gland cells and the immune cells , releasing steroids and down-regulating the pro-mtlammatory mediators , thus reducing me inflammatory responses .
So , the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor agonists like diazepam could be of a high pharmacological interest as a potential anti-inflammatory agents.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of diazepam , a benzodiazepine receptor agonist on the different inflammatory responses in the experimental animals.
Eighty-eight albino rats , of both sexes , weighing about 200 - 250 grams for each rat and forty mice of both sexes , weighing 25-30 grams for each mice ; were used in this work .
These animals were classified and divided for induction of the different experimental models of inflammation. The inflammatory models of the present work , including the acute and chronic inflammatory models .
The acute models of inflammation include carrageenan-induced acute inflammatory paw edema of the rats ( CIPE), and carrageenan-induced acute inflammatory reaction in the murine air-pouch
