Abstract
Meningitis is one of the important public health problams in different parts of the world including our cou.ntry .Alexandria was reported to have the highest incidence of cerebrospinal maningitis in Egypt. 2- The aim of this study was to add informa tion about the v5rious agents causing bactarial meningitis in ” the community of AlexEndria-Egypt, with a special stres s on the means of their diagnosis and to clarify the carrier status among family contacts of cases and primary school students and its relation to the occurrence of the disease J- ’The main part of this study was carried out on 483 patients with acute central nervous system inf~ction who were admitted to the Alexandria fever hospital during the period ’from February 1974 to January 1975 . ” ~ carrier study was also made on 683 contacts of patients in the hospital ~nd at homes, and on 32b students who were subjected to a carrier survey. 4-The samples collected from patients were 447 cerebro spinal fluid, 289 blood, and 417 nasopharyngeal swabs. from the contacts 688 nasopharyngeal swabs ware collected only once, and from the students they were collected monthly for eight monthly Gotalling 1980 swabs.
