Abstract

The syndrome of polycystic ovaries (PCOS) is associated with adiposity and metabolic changes predisposing to insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus.
Because the recently discovered GH secretagogue, ghrelin, is intimately involved in the control of appetite and weight regulation, we studied ghrelin levels in two groups of thirty otherwise healthy women with PCOS who were grouped according to their body mass index into obese&lean(BMI >30 or <25 respectively).
They were compared with thirty healthy female control patients also grouped according to their BMI into two groups(15 each)obese&lean controls.
In All the 4 groups, there was a significant inverse correlation between fasting plasma ghrelin levels&the body mass index(p<0.05).
Multivariate regression analysis did not demonstrate any correlation between fasting plasma ghrelin level and LH/FSH ratio or the mean number of follicles by u/s in the PCOS patients.
