Abstract

Breast carcinoma in situ is defined as a group of neoplasms arising from the duct epithelium (duct carcinoma in situ) or from the lobular epithelium (lobular carcinoma in situ) of breast tissue confined by basement membrane and not invading the surrounding stroma.
DCIS is largely a malignancy confined to the breast itself with little or no risk of regional or distant spread and it’s commonly detected as mammographic calcification. DCIS is a precursor of invasive duct carcinoma.
LCIS forms no mass, nor does it lead to calcification. It is consequently a clinically silent process. It is found as ”bystander” diagnosis only when a biopsy is performed on the basis of some other lesion.
