Abstract Food borne infectious disease is one of the most serious public health problems for children in preschool age. Contamination of food plays’ a major role leading to high mortality in developing countries. It is either produced by unhygienic food handling or it may result from the lack of mothers’ knowledge regarding safe food. Aim of the study: The present work was conducted through a cross sectional follow up design with the following aims to: I. Assess the knowledge of mothers regarding provision of food safety for their . preschool children. 2. Study the practices of mothers regarding providing safe food for their preschool children. 3. Construct, implement and evaluate a health education program for mothers of preschool children concerning safety food. I I Sample: A sample of six hundred children of both sexes aged 2-5 years who attended day care centers and their mothers were selected randomly, three hundred from social affairs day care centers (group 1) and the other three hundred children attended language day care centers (group 2), 50 mothers from each DCC. I I , Setting: Twelve day care centers from the six districts in Alexandria governorate, one from social affairs and the other from language day care centers were chosen randomly. There are two types of day care centers: I. Centers affiliated to the Ministry of Social Mfairs. 2. Centers affiliated to language schools day care centers were used for data collection. I 11’ ’11 Tool: A specially designed interview sheet was used, this sheet included: 1. Personal and socioeconomic characteristics for children and their mothers, as well as their families. 2. Biological data as age of child and birth order. 3. Information related to knowledge and practices of mothers regarding food safety. Knowledge and practices of mothers regarding provision of safe food for their children were measured by using the following scoring system: - Right and complete answer were scored I, 2 or 3 according to the number of items in the question. - Right and incomplete answers were given half of the above score. |
