Abstract

Road transportation network development is considered one of the keys to rapid modernization and development specially in most developing countries. One of the major problem establishing a road network is the excessive cost of the road construction. These costs are often associate with geotechnicel and topographic constraints. The possibility of using a GIS to support highway location in practice, it is shown that a GIS can be used to generate and select feasible highway allignment. The study area is located in dahab region south sinai covered about 196KM2 and extend from latitude 28º25,30 and 28°30,30 N and longitudes 34°22,30 and 34º30,00 E.
The majority of land cover of this aria is a hilly rocks with main streams and tributaries branching from it in all directions. Major mapping units were defined from visual interpretation land satellite remote sensing images [scale(1:100.000(],aerial photographs [scale(1:25.000), and topographic maps [scale (1:25000)].
These data sources, obviously and greatly improve the information available to road system planners. When these information is stored in GIS, a database is created and a terrain evalution was then repared for the propose of selecting an optimum highway route. On the basis, five alternative route corridors were identified with descriptions of the advantage and disadvantages of each. A route selection algorikthm was implemented and interfaced using a GIS software (ILWIS programme) on a personal computer to qenerate the cheapest and the most direct routes.
