Abstract

The aim of the present work is to study the downward and upward movement of salts and water upon wetting columns of soils and to explain the different patterns of salt distribution in soil profiles in California. Results obtained reveal that downward movement of salts exceeds the upward movement. Salts tend to accumulate in the finer textural portion regardless of its position in the soil column. The presence of salt in any soil increases moisture loss by evaporation and lowers its water holding capacity at any given tension.
